The Plunger Family
Family Holiday
Where every day becomes an experience
A holiday on our farm in South Tyrol is a fantastic adventure for the entire family all year round. For children there is much to discover and marvel at. On our natural playground you can play table tennis, table football and various ball games, as well as swings, slides, seesaws, sandboxes and pedal tractors. In winter, snow slides and sledges await you for endless snow fun. We’re happy to show you our everyday life and daily work. No matter whether it is feeding the various farm animals, milking the cows or harvesting hay, there is always something to do, to experience and to explore.
Animals on our farm
Unique experiences in the Dolomites
Our everyday life and the work on our farm are shaped by our animals. The aromatic hay of the meadows that we cultivate around Siusi, Castelrotto and the largest high alpine pasture in Europe, the Alpe di Siusi, is used to feed our animals. From the forest we get the wood to heat the farmhouse and the apartments.
The cows are being milked in the morning and in the evening. They spend the warm season on our farm’s own alpine hut, where their milk tastes particularly delicious thanks to fresh air and nutritious alpine herbs. The milk, the main product of our farm, is processed regionally into various dairy products. You are welcome to help feed the calves, watch the process of milking and later taste the freshly milked milk yourself.
Our four cats can be found everywhere on the farm and are especially cuddly. Just like our rabbits, they especially like being petted by children. During the warm months you can also observe numerous species of butterflies and colorful songbirds in our garden and every now and then at dawn a deer scampering across the meadows.
One working year on our farm
Living to the rhythm of nature
The seasons are the most important factors influencing our work. Depending on the weather and the month, besides the daily milking of the cows, there are various kinds of work on our farm and our meadows and forests.
In spring, when the days slowly get longer, we prepare the meadows. They are essential for a good and successful year. In addition, we get the garden ready and plant the first salad and vegetables. With the beginning of April meadows and trees awaken and slowly also the cows and calves are looking forward to the upcoming summer on the Alpe di Siusi.
Summer is the most work intensive time on our farm. Cows and calves are on the mountain pasture and the hay harvest is coming closer. Our meadows above Siusi are usually mowed three to four times and the fields on the Alpe di Siusi once.
In autumn the last meadows are mowed and cows and calves come back home to the farm. The first fruits and vegetables in the garden can now be harvested: Apples, pears and plums are picked and potatoes are collected from the fields. In October we make the meadows and gardens ready for winter.
When the winter begins, we now have some time to rest. In the cold season we mainly take care of the maintenance of the machines and work in the forest, which we use to heat the farmhouse.
Our alp in the Dolomites
Experience the Alm life
Our cows and calves spend their summer on the Alpe di Siusi, located within the Nature Park Sciliar-Catinaccio, which became part of the protected UNESCO World Heritage in the year 2009. Vast landscapes, flowering meadows, rushing streams and legendary peaks: this is where the Dolomites show their most impressive side.
On our family-run alpine hut situated at about 1,800 m above sea level, our cows enjoy the clear mountain air and the spicy alpine herbs, which gives their milk a delicious taste. You are welcome to visit us here and experience the traditional and rustic alpine life.
Farm Products
The taste of farm holidays
Living with and surrounded by nature is what inspires us every day. And where much love is put into cultivating the environment, many delicious products can be harvested. The fresh milk of our beautiful cows is delivered daily to the Brimi Sennerei, which then processes it into mozzarella. We keep back some of it for our own use, of which you are welcome to taste. It is an expression of our daily work and passion and thus tastes particularly good.
Upon request and depending on availability, you are also welcome to enjoy our healthy herbs and purchase the fresh vegetables. We attach great value to healthy food and are happy to guide you through our garden, where we explain to you what we cultivate, what we process it into and how the rural cycle of nature works. In the morning we offer our guests a fresh bread delivery service from our bakery in Siusi or a breakfast basket with delicious and regional products and thus start perfectly and full of energy into an eventful day in the Sciliar area.
The surrounding meadows and forests as well as the trees and bushes around our farm offer different delicacies depending on the season. Every year there are growing juicy apples, pears and plums but also raspberries and currants. In autumn we use them to prepare wonderful fruit spreads, jams and juices according to traditional recipes.
